Ethereal is a freely available, open source network traffic analysis tool. It is maintained by the Ethereal Project and is available for most Unix and Linux variants as well as Microsoft Windows operating systems. A condition exists where the DNS dissector routine may enter an infinite loop while processing a request. This may be triggered by a maliciously constructed DNS query transmitted across the network. A remote attacker may exploit this vulnerability to prevent Ethereal from functioning.
