EMS, or the Event Monitoring System, is a component of the ServiceControl network management suite for HP-UX systems. EMS is used for polling systems, detecting faults and reporting performance. According to HP-UX Security Advisory HPSBUX0011-131, EMS contains a locally exploitable security vulnerability in its handling of system files. The vulnerability provides the ability for an attacker to change the permissions of an arbitrary file on the root partition. HP has not disclosed what exactly those permissions are, but they may lead to an elevation of privileges. Additional technical details are unavailable at this time. It is advised that HP-UX system operators using ServiceControl upgrade to the newest version of EMS (see the solutions section or advisory for details).
